7th Sunday in Ordinary Time

sermon1Today we celebrate the 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time. In these Sundays of our own Time coming after Christmas Time, we can hear so clearly the radical call of following our Lord Jesus Christ. Being a nice person is not what the Gospel is about. The Gospel is about following the Lord Jesus, becoming His disciple, spending our lives in serving Him and allowing ourselves to be formed by Him. Perhaps none of us wants to be a fanatic. On the other hand, it is clear that Jesus invites us to follow Him in a very radical way.

Each Sunday we are going to Church for the Eucharist to meet Jesus who teach us to be more radical, to be the salt of the earth. We meet with other fellow sisters and brothers, we exchange our experiences and our faith is going to be more steadfast. But we need the real friends who will introduce us to Jesus and who will carry us before his face. And this is the main function of the community of the Church to bring us before Jesus. We can help each other in this duty very well… we only have to want that.

One Main Point

Jesus brings God’s law to perfection (continued). Last week’s reading presents four pairs of antitheses, showing that Jesus does not abolish the law but makes it perfect. This week’s reading continues with two more pairs of antitheses on the same theme. The images aim to express an overall spirit of perfection rather than set specific rules.

Reflections

  1. Listen to Jesus’ words and tone and gestures. Does he mean what he says? Am I shocked?
  2. Can I follow Jesus in my situation? Do I want to?
  3. How would I be, with the world and in my heart, if I try to follow Jesus to perfection?
