30th Sunday in Ordinary Time

holyspirit4Today we celebrate the 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time.

When we meet in Church with God Almighty and with our brothers and sisters we celebrate and we build our community. But very often we recognize our real brothers when we work together, when our common effort displays our real love.

We are the Church – Community of brothers and sisters who really use the commandment of love. We are not a group of friends, or club of Holy Cross who only likes somebody/ no we love even our enemies.

The Eucharist is the real meal of love when the brothers and sisters meet in the face of the God who is our Father. We are together with our big Brother Jesus Christ and we help one another as He helps the people, especially He helps the Blind Man – Bartimaeus in today’s gospel. Today we have to help one another as Jesus did 2000 years ago.

One Main Point

Bartimaeus, the blind beggar, is a model for all disciples. He is singularly focused on Jesus as the source of his salvation. He rejoices when he is called, throwing away whatever he holds dear, in faith that what Jesus gives is worth much more.

Reflections

  1. The blind man is not vague in his request to Jesus. He knows what he needs–to see. What do I need spiritually? I ask God to help me in my self-examination.
  2. I contrast the response of this blind man, and that of the rich man in Mark 17-22. Jesus asks the rich man to sell what he has and give to the poor. The rich man walks away sad, unwilling to do as Jesus asks. In the Gospel today, the blind man throws away what little he has. What is Jesus asking me to do in my daily life? Does my response resemble that of the blind man, or the rich man? Which is my security, “my cloak?” I ask God for FAITH, to trust him.
