12th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME; Father’s Day

Today we celebrate the 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time and also the Father’s Day.

On this Father’s Day we are praying for our dads, whether they are near or far away, living or deceased, and especially for the dads here in our congregation.

In today’s Gospel we see the power of the wind and the sea upon a fragile boat. In the boat are the terrified disciples and the sleeping Jesus. To the early Christians the boat was a symbol of the Church, assaulted by the diabolical powers of materialism and paganism, tossed about by a multitude of attackers, seemingly so fragile it will fall apart at any moment. But the ship of the Church is not without its own power, for in it is Jesus Christ. He protects the boat from assault. He protects the Church. He protects us today also.
The Eucharist is the time when we shout out and pray to Jesus Christ. It looks like Jesus is sleeping when our life deals with cruelties and it seems to be collapsing all around us. It is only in the power of faith and in the presence of Christ that we overcome all of life’s cruel trials.

“Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey?”

  • It is true, the freedom of my will is a great thing. But this freedom is not absolute self-sufficiency. If the essence of freedom were merely the act of choice, then the mere fact of making choices would perfect our freedom.” (Thomas Merton – No Man is an Island)

One Main Point

We need to remember that Jesus is always with us in the boat of our life.
