24th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME; Solemnity of Brotherly Love; 20th Anniversary of 9/11

Today we celebrate the 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time and the Solemnity of Brotherly love in our PNCC; yesterday we had the 20th Anniversary of 9/11; on Sep. 14 we will have the Feast – Triumph of the Cross – which reminds us that we are from the Holy Cross Parish and it is our pride and our challenge.

In Ordinary Time we got from God the question which is the most important question for our whole lives. This Question is about Jesus: who He is for us? The respond which we now formulate is maybe similar to the response of St. Peter from today’s Gospel: you are the Messiah (Christ) the Son of God. But the words of faith which we say in Holy Mass have to mirror in our daily lives by the deeds of that faith.

The Mass which we now celebrate has the two main parts: the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the knowledge and the practice of our faith. Our life as Christians has the same complexity (zlozonosc): Theological Formulations and Life Implications

“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.”

  • “If I did not believe in God I think I would be boundin conscience to become an anarchist. Yet, if I did not believe in God, I wonder if I could have the consolation of being bound in conscience to do anything. Conscience is the soul of freedom, its eyes, its energy, its life. Without conscience, freedom never knows what to do with itself”. Thomas Merton – No Man is an Island)
  • MY MISSION: When I am the disciple of Christ and the member of his Church I realize this and participate in all matters which concern Him. The Ordinary Season and the Sunday’s Masses are not my challenge but my privilege.

Reflections

  1. If you meet Jesus today, how do you answer his question: “Who do you say I am?”
  2. In what areas of your life (relationships, priorities, family, career…) does “your way” still conflict with “Jesus’ way”?
  3. What does the call to “deny yourself and carry the cross” mean to you personally? How do you apply that in your life?

One Main Point

Following Jesus is no rose garden. It will cost you everything.
