1st SUNDAY OF ADVENT – Hope

Today we celebrate the 1st Sunday of Advent. The Advent Season begins the new Liturgical Year 2023 which makes us closer to our salvation. The topic for the Year 2023 is: “Lord, give us the new proposal of Your Kingdom.”. It reminds us that only God can make us new in our strive for His perfection. We can ask Him of that by our prayers, we can make some new efforts by bringing new people to our Church Community – but the last word of acceptance and desire is in God’s hands not ours. From the other side we ask for the blessing of our Parish not for condemnation and God can do that by multiply our numbers and make them Holy. Especially when we go for the Holy Eucharist each Sunday, we can feel the joy and we can say thanks to God by our worship through his son Jesus Christ.

The first period of the Church Year – Advent helps us to prepare ourselves for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in our lives. At the beginning of this season, we want to be the Church watchful and ready for the second coming of the Lord.

“In those days before the flood, they were eating and drinking…”

The psychological conscience is secondary in the life of the spirit. Although it can seize upon an occasional reflection of ultimate reality, the psychological conscience cannot remain for long in union with a realm that is beyond our consciousness. But moral conscience can. (Thomas Merton – No Man is an Island)

A life of prayer will make a life of love to Christ, to other Christians, and to those without Christ.

Reflections

  1. It is difficult to question what I do routinely, and even more difficult when it appears good. For example, I work hard to earn a living for the family I love; however I may forget to ask whether God calls me to work that much, whether I work in a loving manner, and whether I share my earnings with the poor in the ghetto I pass by everyday on the way to work. Do I set some time or get some outside perspectives to help me examine my life?
  2. If I were to die tonight, what would I do now?
  3. Would my watchfulness appear ridiculous to people around me, the way Noah’s ark did? If so, dare I?

One Main Point

I should watch, open my eyes, and examine my life. Though it appears routine, commonly accepted, and like everyone else, am I ready?
