11th Sunday in Ordinary Time; Father’s Day

Today we celebrate the 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time and also the Father’s Day.

On this Father’s Day we are praying for our dads, whether they are near or far away, living or deceased, and especially for the dads here in our congregation.

From the other side The idea of election of the apostles that we will hear in today’s Gospel is for us the signpost for our own lives. We are elected by Christ and there are two sides of that call for us, namely (1) to be with him, i.e., to learn from him, to receive his grace and blessing, and (2) to be sent out to proclaim the message, i.e., to share with others what we have learnt from Jesus, to go out and be a grace and blessing to others in return.

The Eucharist is the first part of our call by Christ – here we are with Jesus and learn from Him. After Eucharist we start the other part of proclaiming, this is an essential part of what it means to be a Christian. Here and Now on Eucharist we get some power to do the duty of Christianity.

“Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.”

One Main Point

Do not be afraid. Jesus repeated that 3 times. We need not fear mere human beings. We should fear God alone.

Reflections

  1. Examine my fears. What are they? What do I have to hide, and from whom?
  2. What is the worst possible case when everyone knows my bad secrets?
  3. Ask Jesus to explain what he means to me when he repeatedly says “do not be afraid.”
  4. Do I experience new freedom in God’s honor rather than human beings’?
